When transferring files between two browsers, pairing codes and QR codes serve as temporary cryptographic meeting points that allow devices to discover each other without creating permanent accounts or broadcasting identity beacons.
How the 6-digit room code functions
When you open iFileSender, the client browser connects to a lightweight signaling gateway and requests a temporary session room. The gateway assigns a randomized 6-digit number (e.g. 482-910).
- The code acts as a lookup key in an ephemeral Redis or Cloudflare Durable Object registry.
- When Device B types in that 6-digit code or scans the QR code containing the room URL, the signaling gateway matches the two sockets.
- The devices exchange their local ICE network candidates through the room.
- Once the direct peer connection is established, the room is dismantled and deleted from server memory.
Why QR codes make mobile pairing effortless
Typing alphanumeric URLs or long session keys on a smartphone virtual keyboard is slow and prone to typographical errors. A QR code encodes the complete session URL (including room identifier) into a high-contrast 2D matrix. Pointing your phone camera at the monitor parses the coordinates in under 100 milliseconds and instantly launches the session in your mobile browser.
