Can You Transfer Files Between Devices Without the Internet?
Find out how local offline Wi-Fi networks and mobile hotspots let you move files between phones and laptops even when internet access is down.
Yes, you can transfer files between devices without active internet access. Local area networks (LANs) and mobile phone hotspots can move data directly between devices regardless of whether your broadband connection to the outside world is operational.
Understanding the difference between Wi-Fi and the internet
Many people assume Wi-Fi and the internet are the same thing, but they operate at distinct network layers:
- The internet: The global network of interconnected servers, websites, and service providers reached through your modem.
- Wi-Fi: The local wireless radio connection between your devices (phones, computers, printers) and your local router.
Even if your internet service provider (ISP) suffers an outage, your Wi-Fi router remains fully functional. Devices connected to that router can still communicate with each other at local gigabit speeds.
Transferring files via mobile hotspot
If you are outdoors, traveling on an airplane, or at a remote campsite with zero cell reception:
- Turn on Personal Hotspot on your smartphone.
- Connect your laptop, tablet, or second phone to that hotspot's Wi-Fi network.
- Open iFileSender (or load it from your browser cache). The devices discover each other locally over the hotspot radio link and transfer files without using any cellular data.
Frequently asked questions
Does turning on a mobile hotspot require active cellular data?
No. The hotspot creates a local Wi-Fi router inside your phone. Devices can connect and share files locally even in airplane mode or with mobile data disabled.
